Alexandra "Sasha" Pauline Cohen was born on October
26th, 1984. She asked people to call her Sasha a Russian
nickname for Alexandra when she first went to school
because at the time she could not spell Alexandra. Sasha
started gymnastics at age 5 and progressed to level 5 of
the 10 levels but she switched to skating at age 7. It
was a good decision. Sasha took group lessons until the
age of 10 when she decided to take skating seriously.
She began working with Yvonne Nicks. That very same year
Sasha landed her axel and her first double jump and at
age 11 Sasha could land all of the double jumps except
the double axel. Sasha then began working with Yvonne's
husband John Nicks. Sasha placed 2nd at the U.S. Junior
Championships in 1999 and her future as a skater looked
promising.
But no one, not even Sasha herself was prepared for what
was going to happen next. In 2000 Sasha shocked the
skating world by placing first in the short program at
the U.S. Senior Championships. Overall she placed second
behind World Champion Michelle Kwan. Sasha was too young
to go to the Worlds that year so Angela Nicodinov took
her place. In 2000- 2001 season Sasha only competed in 2
competitions because of a back injury. Now Sasha is back
and better than ever. She placed second at the U.S.
Championships again and went to the Olympics in Salt
Lake City. She is trying to become the first woman ever
to land a quadruple jump in competition. Sasha placed
fourth at the Olympics before ever going to a World
Championship. Later she went to the Worlds and placed
fourth there as well.
Over the summer Sasha made a huge decision. She left her
old coach John Nicks and she and her entire family moved
across the country to Newington, Conneticut to train
with Tatiana Tarasova and Nikolai Morosov at the
International Figure Skating Center. (Morosov later left
that center.) The decision proved to be a smart one.
Sasha won 5 events the next season: Skate Canada,
Trophee Lalique, Canadian Ophen, Crest Whitestrips
International Figure Skating Challenge and most recently
the Grand Prix Finals. Despite a disopointing 3rd place
finish at the U.S. Nationals Sasha was confident going
into the World Championships. Despite finishing fourth
again Sasha had many firsts landing her first triple
lutz- triple toe combination and skated her first clean
seven triple program.
After a summer of working with Tatiana Tarasova Sasha
entered the 2003- 2004 skating season more confident
than ever. She won four events in a row Campbells
Interantional her first victory over Michelle Kwan and
she won her three Grand Prix Events Skate America, Skate
Canada and Trophee Lalique. She placed second at the
Grand Prix Fianls and has failed to place out of the
medals this season. Two weeks before Nationals Tarasova
and Sasha parted well due to Tarasova's bad health and
Sasha began working with Robin Wagner. Wagner coached
Sarah Hughes to an Olympic gold medal and hopes to do
the same with Sasha. Sasha won her thrid U.S. silver
medal despite having shingles the week before and with a
new coach. She has two months to prepare for the Worlds
in Germany and is very excited. After Worlds Sasha will
tour with Champions on Ice and debut a new program she
choreographed with Robin.
Despite of all this skating, Sasha still finds time for
a fun off-ice life.. She graduated from high school last
spring with straight As. She is taking correspondance
courses in nutrition through Penn State Unniversity. She
has modeled for important magazines like Seventeen and V
and appears in commercials and print ads for Citizen
Eco-Drive Watches. She has appeared on the cover of
Blades on Ice and International Figure Skating
magazines. She loves reading, art, shopping, hanging out
with friends and family, cooking, making jewlery and
desgning costumes.
